If you were a young girl or woman of any age that listened to country music in the mid-late 90’s, it’s quite a guarantee that Shania
Twain was somewhere in your cd collection or you at least heard her ad infinitum on the radio.
Shania Twain is one of those rare acts that has a very interesting backstory with a Cinderella-like quality. Born in Windsor, Ontario Canada into abject poverty, Twain had to endure both tragedy that came in the form of her parents dying in horrific car wreck and taking care of her younger siblings in their absence. It was during this time that she honed her talents in the local bars and resorts to keep the family afloat.
This feisty Canadian, Twain, in the 90’s pushed country music to its pop limits and beyond international boundaries like never before with such albums as The Woman In Me and Come On Over. She makes country music for those that are normally appalled by the hat-wearin, honky-tonk-frequenting, hillbilly image that previously defined country music. She is the quintessential timeless country chic lady and proves it on songs like the title track, Come On Over, That Don’t Impress Me Much, and the still much-loved ballad You’re Still the One.
However some tracks such as Rock This Country, Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You), Whatever You Do! Don’t!, and Rock This Country don’t even sound like country music. That doesn’t stop them from being great tracks.
Overall I would recommend this album. It is a great album to listen to.
